Crystal’s Lakeview Food Shop, 1961

The corner of 26th Avenue East and London Road keeps popping up in photos I find in the Attic. The picture above shows a grocery that once was located on that corner; today, the site is occupied by Black Woods restaurant.

Below is photograph of the same store from earlier that year – Feb. 3, 1961, to be exact. There was a name change during those few months, and the building’s facade was renovated. A sign in the window reads "Closing Out Sale," so there must have been a change in ownership.

Does anyone want to share any memories of this store?

  1. You report this grocery store keeps popping up in photos. Can you post or send to me more photos. This was my grandfather’s store. I remember one photo that I believe appeared in the news that showed Grandpa Bonello in front of his store with many watermelons he sold at the fruit stand in front of the store. Thank you for any help in posting or sending more photos of this grocery store at London Rd. and 26th Ave. East.

  2. The store was owned by my grandfather; he died in ’67. my grandmother died in’78. Many memories of the store- all fond!

  3. In the mid-60s there was a Crystal’s Imported Food shop on West Superior Street, near the old Greyhound Bus Station. I remember that it was about the only place in town where you could buy certain imported foods, like jars of grape leaves or specialty salt. Wonder if the two stores are related?
